Curtain Wall

A Growing Trend in Architectural Design

Today, the use of a curtain wall remains prevalent in the world of architecture. The concept of a curtain wall pertains to an outer non-structural wall annexed to a building, the purpose of which is to provide resistance against water infiltration and air leakage. It represents approximately 50{b752aeebc2cf038fbc174713feb938b8bfdc6302438d4bf7ef394afc223980e6} up to 100{b752aeebc2cf038fbc174713feb938b8bfdc6302438d4bf7ef394afc223980e6} of the exterior cladding of a building and is a critical component of a vertical building envelope.

A curtain wall is non-load bearing which means that it does not carry the load of either the roof or floor of the building. Because it does not carry weight from the building, a façade can be built with cost-effective lightweight materials. A building façade may consist of several substrates such as aluminum framing, stainless steel, aluminum frame, glazing, sealant, metal connections and rubber gaskets.

The Benefits of Curtain Wall Installation

Here are the many benefits of installing a curtain wall system in a building:

A typical curtain wall has an airtight design. A stick built curtain wall, for instance, comes with an air tight system minimizing air leakage at the glass aluminum joint using either a dry or wet seal. In a unitized curtain wall system, an additional air barrier is set in between the mullions. Effective compartmentalization in curtain walling is necessary to cope with different air pressures across the façade. A curtain wall that is not properly sealed is vulnerable to rain penetration. Once wind and rain impinge on the façade, rain water might accumulate in the cavity and overflow into the ceiling or window head of building interiors.
In curtain walling, there are two lines of defense against water penetration: the primary level of protection ensures elimination of water ingress, while the second level directs the flow of percolated water along in-wall drainage systems. Sealant used in building façades further prevents moisture intrusion that causes damage to interior building sections.
Curtain wall installations with insulated glass can enhance thermal qualities. Glazing and insulation help filter the heat flowing in and out of the structure. Glazed curtain walls help deflect infrared rays carrying heat. The use of glass material in building façades can also reduce heat transfer.
With its aesthetic feature, a curtain wall system can be the focal point of a building design. The use of glass façade gives the building a look of sophistication and transparency when viewed from afar.
A building façade permits the entry of natural light into the interiors. The installation of a curtain wall enables structures to take advantage of natural daylight and reduce energy consumption.
